Originally called Contrology, Joseph Pilates formulated a series of exercises using the mind to control muscles. It focused mainly on the core postural muscles, which help keep the body balanced and provide support for the spine.
It was during World War One, whilst a prisoner of war, that Pilates was able to refine his method of exercising and teaching to help improve the strength and general wellbeing of potential clients.
After the War, Pilates went on to work with and train police officers in Germany and dancers in New York – helping them with rehabilitation, and increasing their flexibility, strength and stamina.
Pilates as an exercise form has progressed and developed from there over the years and is a great way of building internal muscle strength, helping with proprioception and providing some ‘me time’ during a busy week.
